Definition

Hematochezia refers to the passage of fresh blood through the anus, usually in or with stools. It typically indicates bleeding in the lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract, such as the colon, rectum, or anus.

Common Causes of Hematochezia:

  • Hemorrhoids: Swollen blood vessels in the rectum or anus.
  • Anal fissures: Small tears in the lining of the anus.
  • Diverticular disease: Bleeding from diverticula, which are small pouches in the colon wall.
  • Colorectal cancer or polyps: May cause visible blood in stool.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
  • Infections: From bacteria like E. coli or Shigella.
  • Angiodysplasia: Fragile blood vessels in the colon.
  • Ischemic colitis: Reduced blood flow to the colon.

If you notice hematochezia, it's essential to seek medical evaluation, as it can range from a benign condition like hemorrhoids to a more serious one like colorectal cancer.
